The last-16 draw is constrained by league-phase ranking. It does not place all sixteen surviving clubs into one unrestricted bowl.

By the time the round-of-16 draw takes place, much of the bracket has already been shaped. The league table created top-eight pairs, while the February play-off draw placed the remaining clubs into corresponding paths.

The draw decides which side of each paired route a club occupies. It does not erase the advantage earned across the eight league-phase matches.

How league positions create the seeded pairs

First and second form one seeded pair, third and fourth another, fifth and sixth another, and seventh and eighth the final pair. A club does not know its exact round-of-16 opponent immediately after matchday eight, but it knows the limited section from which that opponent can emerge.

The play-off draw has already attached positions nine to 24 to corresponding sides of the bracket.

What the round-of-16 draw actually decides

The draw places each top-eight club into one of the two available positions for its pair. That determines which relevant play-off winner it will meet and the side of the bracket it occupies.

The process is therefore closer to assigning paths than redrawing the tournament from the beginning.

Can clubs from the same country meet?

The knockout phase does not apply the same general national-protection rule used in the league-phase draw. Clubs from the same association can meet when the bracket and draw allow it. A repeat of a league-phase opponent can also be possible under the knockout rules.

Supporters should judge possibilities from the published bracket rather than applying the old group-stage restrictions from memory.

Why finishing first is different from finishing eighth

Both positions avoid the February play-offs, but they enter different paired sections. The 2026/27 regulations also extend second-leg seeding into later rounds: positions one to four receive the return leg at home in the quarter-finals, while positions one and two carry that status into the semi-final bracket path.

A higher finish can therefore improve more than the immediate opponent pool.

How to read the draw without confusion

  • Start with the final league-phase table
  • Locate the paired positions in the official bracket
  • Add the February play-off winners
  • Apply the round-of-16 placement draw
  • Track the inherited seeding path into later rounds

Frequently asked questions

Is the Champions League round-of-16 draw completely open?

No. League-phase positions and the knockout play-off bracket restrict the possible pairings.

Can teams from the same country meet in the last 16?

Yes, the league-phase association protection does not continue as a general knockout restriction.

Who plays the second leg at home?

The top-eight seeded club does so in principle.

Does first place receive the same path as eighth?

No. Both advance directly, but they are placed in different ranking pairs and bracket routes.
