Champions League Squad Registration Rules 2026/27

Champions League squads are not a simple list of a club’s best 25 players. UEFA’s local training rules, separate youth list and fixed deadlines shape every selection.

A club can own a deep first-team squad and still face a difficult European registration decision. The main Champions League list is capped, locally trained places are protected and a player who is available domestically is not automatically eligible in UEFA competition.

For 2026/27, the central document is UEFA Article 31. It governs List A and List B, sets the league-phase deadline and explains the limited exceptions for injuries and goalkeepers. Article 32 then covers the new players who can be added after the league phase.

The 25-player List A limit

List A is the senior registration list. UEFA permits no more than 25 players on it during the season. The number is a ceiling rather than a guaranteed allowance because a club that cannot satisfy the locally trained quota must leave corresponding places empty.

At least two goalkeepers must appear on List A. Across List A and List B together, a club must register at least three goalkeepers.

Why the local training quota changes the real calculation

Eight List A places are reserved for locally trained players. Within that group, no more than four can be association-trained, which means a full 25-player list needs at least four club-trained players and four further locally trained players of either qualifying type.

Nationality is not the test. UEFA looks at where a player was registered during the specified development years. A foreign national can be club-trained, while an English player who developed abroad may not count as locally trained for an English club.

The main 2026/27 deadline

For every match from the first league-phase fixture through to the final, clubs must submit List A by 2 September 2026 at 23:59 CET. Earlier deadlines apply in each qualifying round and the play-offs.

That timing matters because the summer transfer window and European registration window are separate systems. Completing a transfer does not by itself place the player on the Champions League list.

List B and young players

UEFA allows an unlimited number of eligible List B players, with the list submitted by 23:59 CET on the day before the relevant match. The player must satisfy age and continuous-registration requirements, so List B is not an open youth exemption for every under-21 footballer.

For 2026/27, the usual birth threshold is on or after 1 January 2005, together with the prescribed period at the club since the player’s 15th birthday. Eligible 16-year-olds need the previous two uninterrupted years of club registration.

Changes after the league phase

A club reaching the knockout phase can register a maximum of three new eligible players by 4 February 2027 at 23:59 CET. Those players may already have represented another club in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League during the same season.

List A still cannot exceed 25 and the locally trained quota must still be respected. In practice, adding a January signing may require removing another player from the European list.

The tactical consequence for midfield depth

Midfield is often where the arithmetic bites. Coaches want a holder, press-resistant controller, runner and attacking option, but full-back cover and goalkeeping obligations compete for the same senior places. A club-trained midfielder can therefore provide two kinds of value: tactical usefulness and registration flexibility.

The public debate tends to focus on the most surprising omission. The better question is which combination of roles, injury cover and locally trained status made the final list coherent.
