How the Champions League Draw Works in 2026/27

Each club is drawn against two teams from every pot, one at home and one away. Software completes the opponent allocation within UEFA’s constraints.
The league-phase draw has to create 144 matches while respecting seeding, home-and-away balance and association restrictions. A traditional sequence of hand-drawn balls alone would struggle to complete that puzzle without dead ends.
UEFA therefore combines the ceremonial draw with digital allocation. The aim is not to simulate a league schedule randomly after the event. It is to produce a valid set of opponents within the published framework.
How the pots are formed
The 36 league-phase clubs are divided according to the club coefficient ranking established at the start of the season. The Champions League titleholder sits at the top of pot one. Unlike the old group stage, pot one does not protect a club from playing other pot-one sides.
Every team receives two opponents from every level, so each schedule contains a similar seeding mix even though the specific opponents differ.
How one club receives eight opponents
When a club is selected, the allocation system determines two valid opponents from each pot and assigns one home and one away match from each. The process must also remain compatible with all clubs still to be drawn.
The digital element prevents a late-stage deadlock in which the final teams cannot be given valid schedules.
Association restrictions
In principle, clubs cannot face a team from their own national association during the league phase. A club may face a maximum of two opponents from any other one association. UEFA retains authority to adapt conditions to avoid deadlock or account for relevant executive decisions.
For an English club, that means no Premier League opponent in the league phase under the standard rule, while the schedule cannot be overloaded with clubs from one other country.
Why pot position still matters
Every club plays two opponents from every pot, so a higher pot does not remove elite opposition. It still matters because coefficients determine the pot composition and can affect the identity of the remaining valid opponents. Pot position also reflects European performance over time, although the eventual schedule can feel harder or easier within the same structure.
When dates are assigned
The draw identifies the eight opponents and home or away status. UEFA then confirms the detailed fixture calendar, balancing venue, broadcast and operational constraints. Supporters should not assume the order of names shown during the draw is the playing order.
