Twenty-nine clubs enter the 2026/27 league phase directly. The remaining seven places are won through Champions Path and League Path qualifying.

Automatic qualification is not one universal finishing position across Europe. It depends on an association’s access ranking, domestic league position, UEFA titleholder places and the two European Performance Spots awarded from the previous season.

The access list can also rebalance when a titleholder has already qualified through its domestic championship.

Domestic league places

UEFA’s access list assigns league-phase and qualifying entries according to association rankings. The strongest associations receive several direct places, while champions from lower-ranked associations begin in qualifying.

The exact line in a domestic table must therefore be read against that season’s access list, not assumed from another country or another year.

The titleholder places

The Champions League and Europa League winners receive access to the following Champions League under UEFA’s provisions. When a titleholder has already qualified through the domestic route, rebalancing rules can promote another club from qualifying into a later entry position or the league phase.

The additional place is not simply passed to the next club in the titleholder’s domestic league.

European Performance Spots

Two associations receive an extra league-phase place based on their clubs’ collective performance in UEFA competitions during the previous season. The place is then allocated through the association’s domestic championship according to the applicable rules.

This can create a fifth or additional Champions League place beyond the standard domestic allocation.

Why seven places remain

The final seven league-phase berths are decided through qualifying and the play-offs. Five come from the Champions Path and two from the League Path in the default 2026/27 distribution. The paths keep domestic champions separate from non-champions during key qualifying rounds.

How to verify a club’s status

  • Check the official UEFA access list for the season
  • Confirm the final domestic league position
  • Account for Champions League and Europa League titleholders
  • Identify the two associations awarded performance spots
  • Apply any published rebalancing after titleholders qualify domestically
