Crystal Palace appeal Mateta red card from Spurs defeat
Palace have appealed Jean-Philippe Mateta’s dismissal against Tottenham, arguing his contact with Micky van de Ven was accidental, with the forward currently facing a three-match suspension.
Crystal Palace are appealing Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card shown in the defeat at Tottenham. Details were first published on Tuesday by Sami Mokbel, who reports the club argue Mateta’s contact with Micky van de Ven was accidental and unintentional.
The striker is currently facing a three-match suspension following his dismissal. Palace are taking the case to the Football Association’s disciplinary process, seeking to have the decision overturned so the forward can return to selection.
Under FA procedure, wrongful dismissal claims are considered by an independent regulatory commission that studies the referee’s report and available footage. If the panel judges the sending off to be clearly wrong, the red card is rescinded and the suspension lifted. If the claim fails, the punishment remains, and appeals deemed frivolous can attract further sanction.
The incident occurred during Palace’s loss to Spurs, with Mateta penalised after contact with defender Micky van de Ven. The report adds that the club’s position is the contact was accidental rather than deliberate. No timetable for the hearing was specified.
A successful appeal would make Mateta available for upcoming fixtures, while an adverse ruling would keep him out for the immediate run of games.
