Liverpool have held meetings with external candidates in their search for a sporting director, with Brentford technical director Lee Dykes among those spoken to.

The development was reported on Friday by Sami Mokbel, who adds that owners Fenway Sports Group are leaning towards an internal appointment, with Julian Ward regarded as a strong contender.

The indication that FSG prefer an internal route while also exploring external profiles points to a dual track approach designed to keep options open.
