Two associations receive an extra automatic Champions League place each season, based on the collective European performance of all their clubs in the campaign just completed.

The European Performance Spot has changed the old assumption that fourth place is always the final Champions League line in England. Under the 36-team format, two countries can receive a fifth automatic league-phase place through the previous season’s UEFA results.

For 2026/27, England and Spain finished first and second in the 2025/26 association club coefficient table. Liverpool and Real Betis, each fifth in their domestic league, took the additional places.

How the ranking is calculated

UEFA totals the club coefficient points obtained by every club from an association in that season’s Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. It then divides the total by the number of participating clubs from that association.

The use of an average matters. Countries with more entrants have more chances to collect points, but they also divide the total across a larger number.

Who gets the domestic place

The winning association does not nominate a club. The extra berth goes to the next-best team in the domestic league behind those already qualified directly for the Champions League league phase.

For 2026/27, England’s ordinary four automatic places were supplemented by the European Performance Spot, which went to fifth-placed Liverpool. Spain’s equivalent place went to fifth-placed Real Betis.

The official 2025/26 outcome

UEFA recorded England at 258.125 points from nine clubs, producing an average of 28.680. Spain finished second with 176.750 points from eight clubs, an average of 22.093.

The result was collective. Deep runs outside the Champions League contributed alongside performances in the leading competition.

Why the Conference League can affect a fifth Champions League place

Every coefficient point sits inside the same association average. A Conference League win earns fewer headlines than a Champions League knockout tie, but a sustained run can materially improve the national total.

This creates an unusual alignment late in the season. Premier League clubs competing for fourth or fifth may benefit from English rivals winning matches elsewhere in Europe.

What the spot does not do

  • It does not permanently give a country five Champions League places
  • It does not rely on the five-season access ranking
  • It does not go to the domestic cup winner unless that club is also the next eligible league finisher
  • It does not reduce the value of winning the Champions League or Europa League, which carry their own titleholder access provisions

How to follow the race without being misled

Use UEFA’s current-season association club coefficient table and focus on the average rather than the raw total. Also note how many clubs remain active. A country leading in February can lose ground if most of its teams are eliminated while a rival keeps several clubs deep into spring.
